The Shepherd of Our Souls

PJP2
In Memory of Pope John Paul the Second

Oh Shepherd, Shepherd of our souls
You’ve gone away to be with God,
No longer will we hear those words
That touched the hearts of all who heard
Your messages of wisdom.

The young and poor, the rich and old,
The unbelievers and the cruel
On bended knees with broken hearts
They pray and weep and mourn because
They truly loved you.

You were a man of humble birth
And rose above the common man
Devoted servant of our Lord
The people’s Pope as you were known
Throughout the world.

You were the beacon in our lives
Your brilliant light shone far and wide,
Your word, your touch, your magic smile
Gave hope and comfort to us all
And courage to the meekest.

Without you how can we go on
Facing a future full of strife,
Of terror, wars and discontent
Help us remember all your words
To give us peace and comfort.

Oh Shepherd, you who loved us true
The mighty and the lowly too,
We were your children one and all
Look kindly down from where you are
And bless us.
